Sedation Dentistry
Many people have a tremendous fear of the dentist. We understand your fears and
Dr. Jackson offers oral conscious sedation for patients who choose to be awake but totally relaxed before and during their dental treatment.
We have found that highly anxious and fearful patients are best treated with Oral Conscious Sedation.
Oral conscious sedation is used in our office in two basic forms: anxiolysis and minimal conscious sedation.
Although they differ slightly in their effect, we will use the term conscious sedation for our sedation appointments.
A sedation appointment consists of two basic steps: you will be given a mild sedative the night before the appointment to help you relax and sleep,
then an additional dose of a different sedative is given in the morning of the appointment.
While you relax in one of our comfortable chairs with pillows and a blanket, you may even fall into a gentle sleep during your procedure.
One of the great benefits to the patient is amnesia - almost all patients have no memory of the dental visit the following day.
Since there is an extended recovery time, and sedation absolutely requires the use of a designated driver to transport the patient home after the appointment.
Prior to using oral conscious sedation, Dr. Jackson will review your health history to ensure that this highly effective treatment is right for you.
NuCalm
NuCalm is a system which uses a combination of natural herbs and auditory stimulation to take patients to another level of calming experience.
NuCalm can be used alone or in combination with Nitrous Oxide to provide a comfortable dental experience for patients who are nervous or anxious about dental treatment.
Many patients have enjoyed a relaxed dental experience with the use of NuCalm. NuCalm is all-natural stress intervention. NuCalm scientifically sequences four relaxation therapies to mimic your body’s own process for ‘winding down’ and preparing for sleep. You will feel the same way you feel just as you are about to fall asleep.
Deep relaxation is achieved through 4 simple steps. NuCalm is administered by our dental team at the beginning of the appointment and takes approximately five minutes to apply. While listening to soothing music, the patient will relax comfortably in the chair for the entire appointment.
- All-natural dietary supplements containing a proprietary formulation of amino acids. The dietary supplements will NOT counteract or interfere with any medications or dietary restrictions.
- FDA-cleared microcurrent stimulation. Research shows this helps to rapidly facilitate the relaxation response.
- Soothing music administered with noise-dampening headphones. Layered in the soothing music is proprietary neuroacoustic software designed to facilitate deep relaxation.
- Light-blocking glasses or eye mask to block visual stimuli and help maintain relaxation.
If you use NuCalm you will be able to drive on their own, and there is no recovery time or side effects. NuCalm works best for mild to moderately anxious patients and can be used in combination with Nitrous Oxide Analgesia.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous Oxide is offered for our patients are anxious about having dental treatment.
Known by patients by a variety of names: Inhalation sedation, laughing gas, relative analgesia, RA, happy gas, nitrous, inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide (N2O) and oxygen (O2) can provide a pleasant sedative experience for our patients.
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a gas with no color or smell which you can breathe in to produce a pleasureable feeling.
Most patients experience a euphoric feeling after about 5 minutes of breathing in the gas.
The happy feeling often results in "the giggles" which led the to common nickname.
Because the effects of the drug are reversible in the chair, it allows you to safely drive home or return to work or school after dental treatment.
Many of our patients have found that Nitrous Oxide Analgesia makes their dental visits more comfortable.
The use of a combination of oxygen and nitrous oxide, usually used in addition to local anesthetics, has been used in dentistry for a long time to help relieve anxiety and provide a more relaxed, comfortable experience for dental procedures.
It is safe and the effects are easily reversed with oxygen so that there are no after effects or problems driving home.
Since the nitrous oxide/oxygen is breathed in through the nose, a patient with nasal obstruction would not benefit from the use of nitrous oxide.
